Ultra Violet -Love It Or Hate It

The days of peace and serenity are long gone...according to Pantone! For the second year in a row, they have challenged the design industry with another loud color. Last year it was Greenery, and following suit, the 2018 color of the year is Ultra Violet. Designers are either loving it or hating it. One of my favorite aspects of design is its diversity, so before you turn your back on this controversial hue, read on for my tips and creative ways on how to embrace the purple.

You may remember my South Tampa project, where I fully embraced the purple. Our client envisioned a boutique-style Parisian influence in her bedroom -and that is what we gave her. Perhaps I had a premonition for the 2018 color of the year? In this space we complimented the pale purple walls with luxe purple bedding accents, a bold lavender chair, and a striking purple trim on the window treatments.

One of my favorite examples of "Go Big or Go Home" is interior designer Mary McGee's foyer, featured in House Beautiful. She painted the walls, ceiling, and door in a welcoming shade of lavender. The look is pulled off by very carefully adding complimenting shades of purple as seen in the lighting, bench, and artwork. It starts with picking the right hue, but when you do, big risks often yield beautiful rewards.

Light Up The Season

This year I had the honor of participating in the 2017 'Light Up The Season' benefit hosted at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown. The event and generosity of its' Christmas tree bidders support children's cancer programs at the Children's National Hospital. I teamed up with my friend and talented designer, Christopher Nutter, for such a vital cause.

Each designer was paired with a child from the hospital to bring their Christmas dreams to fruition. We were blessed to meet the sweetest 9-year-old girl. After spending time with her, we found out she wished Christmas to feel like a winter wonderland, which is why we chose a flocked tree. Her favorite colors are pink and turquoise and she was partial to a traditional tree.

Christopher and I gathered ornaments from multiple stores to give our tree a curated look as though it had evolved over time. Keeping the color palette and design aesthetic in mind we collected ornaments and ribbon from Merrifield Garden Center, online, CB2, and World market. We filled in with simple solid glass ornaments from Walmart. A faux fur white tree skirt and pretty but simple wrapped boxes glistened at the bottom. Designing an entire tree from scratch is very much like decorating an empty room. You need a great color palette, a mix of old and new, and a cross between higher-end pieces filled in with a few bargains. And who doesn’t love a tree topped with a crown!? 

The hottest trends in Christmas tree decor adorned the hotel. In addition to our flocked tree below are a few of my favorites...

On the scene were brilliant shades of blue and silver, especially with a coastal vibe. It's no surprise blue prevailed in the tree decor space given that every shade of blue was so relevant in home decor this past year.

A chic and neutral tree spruced up with burlap and natural ornaments keep things classic and timeless this holiday season -not to mention kid and family friendly.

A pastel palette is not what typically comes to mind with seasonal decor, but this wreath would have you doing a double take. Pale pinks make for an enchanting and sophisticated backdrop.

Whatever dashing trend you and yours take on this season it's sure to be spectacular. For added inspiration visit the Four Seasons Georgetown through December 20th to see all of the designers' holiday charm on display.

South Tampa Condo Achieves Peace & Serenity

Our clients, hailing from NYC and Boston, purchased their dream home in lively South Tampa on Bayshore Blvd. They reached out to us to turn their condo into a chic, comfortable, livable space, keeping everything light and happy!

Pamela's inspiration came from Lee Radziwell's iconic Paris apartment, in a look we dubbed "a Paris Rendezvous in Tampa!"

Our homeowner envisioned an airy space filled with light blues and rose quartz (a throwback to the 2016 Pantone colors of the year “Peace & Serenity”). I would say we achieved just that with a pair of Chesterfield tufted rose velvet sofas in the living room, and across the way in the dining room: exquisite soft blue/grey Louis the 16th style dining chairs. The subtle pearl beading on the back of these chairs add such interest, that the space does not need much else to feel special.

In this "French-country-glam" dining room we adorned the wall with a framed Paule Marrot fabric printed in France (a Jackie O fav!). Above the table, a stunning chandelier is the perfect piece of jewelry. The scene is quite captivating.

Taking things to the master bedroom, our clients’ wish list consisted of soft shades of grey lavenders, Asian accents (inspired from travel to Seoul, Korea!), and a boutique hotel style room as a nod to their NYC roots. 

We flanked the bed with more modern mirrors in gold and acrylic over chests which are topped with our clients’ existing lamps from their travels. The newly upholstered bed anchors the room, covered in stunning Yves Delorme bedding, combining luxurious materials with a contemporary and refined feel. Layers of lavender are carefully threaded throughout the space adding to its Parisian flare.

We designed the three bedroom 3,000 square foot Talis Park condo to function as a traditional coastal vacation home for family gatherings, golf retreats, and an eventual spot for retirement. 

My goal in this space was to reach a level of sophistication by means of every day elegance. This design was achieved by mixing furniture that withstands the elements, amidst upscale fixtures such as this Ro Sham Beaux chandelier shown above.

Black and White is Always Right

At Pamela Harvey Interiors, we were excited to be selected to design the Living Room of the 2016 DC Design House.  Our room is featured in the DC by Design blog and The Washington Post style section.

Taking cues from the home’s classic architecture, Pamela envisioned a Living Room design that evokes timeless elegance and subtle glamour. The symmetrical bones of the room encouraged a balanced floor plan, perfect for entertaining. Imagining the ultimate hosting space, we were inspired to include a baby grand piano.

The room’s color palette of black and white with striking pear green accents sets the tone. Strong black finishes with subtle golden accents anchor case goods throughout the room. We chose black drapery panels in a Schumacher moire, hung on an acrylic rod with brass rings to pop against the crisp white walls. 

Paper white Hickory White sofas, covered in party-proof Sunbrella fabric, are accented with pillows in a Mary MacDonald floral and a textured animal print, both from Schumacher.  An exquisite trio of vintage Hollywood Regency ottomans boasts a graphic cut velvet, also from Schumacher, adding a stunning presence opposite the fireplace.

Sconces by Tommy Mitchell feature gilded butterflies encased in a backlit acrylic box, serving as both art and ambient light for the space.  Bronze Sculptures are featured throughout the space, adding both masculinity and sophistication.

Pantone's Colors of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity

Each year Pantone selects a Color of the Year that represents the mood taking place in our culture.  This year Pantone is looking to color your world ‘calm'.  For the first time ever, they’ve selected not one, but two colors as their eponymous Color of the Year: Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) and Serenity (15-3919).

The 2016 D.C. Design House!

For the past 8 years the DC Design House has been the premier design event of spring for the DC metor area. This year is is moving to the fall. Mark your calendars it opens to the public on October 2nd and closes October 30th. I am very honored and excited to be selected to participate  in the 2016 DC Design House again this year. All 20 designers are busy right now painting, wallpapering, hanging light fixtures , installing new landscaping and more, getting ready for the grand opening.

I have been chosen to decorate the Living Room. A classically designed room with great mouldings, a white marble fireplace and plenty of natural light. The first impression of this year’s house is “refined elegance”, represented as you enter the foyer with the black and white marble floor. Taking cues from both the home’s architecture and the black and white beginning. I designed the Living Room to evoke elegance, glamour  - yet restraint.  My concept was to create a room that would by classic and perfect for entertaining. My starting point is a favorite fabric of mine named “Grey Gardens” fitting for a DC residence and it sets the tone of the room. The room is black and white with accents of Pear Green. As you enter the Living Room you will be awestruck by a black lacquer baby grand piano, with an upholstered skirted bench which hosts 1 of a pair of painted Italian peacocks.  The walls – trim and ceiling will be painted in Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion color Pointing.

The  house chosen as this year’s site, which is right next door to the 2013 site, recently served as the temporary residence of the French Ambassador while his house underwent renovation.  The residence — situated on a three-quarter-acre lot at 2509 Foxhall Road in DC’s Wesley Heights/Berkley neighborhood — was designed by GTM Architects and built in 2010 by Gibson Builders.

Listed for $10.8 million by Nancy Itteilag of Washington Fine Properties, the 11,242 square-foot, five-story home boasts 7 bedrooms, 8 full and 2 half baths, 5 fireplaces, and an infinity pool.

That’s a large house to fill and transform, but this year’s designers are certainly up to the task. I’m in esteemed company, for sure. Here’s the complete designer line-up:
